A crucial step in the ATP assay is the extraction of the ATP from the cells, when the cells are opened and the ATPases in the cell neutralized. The process has to be very fast, since if the ATPases are not neutralized immediately they will start degrading the ATP.
If the extractant is not neutralized after use it will degrade the luciferase in the ATP reagents when added. This is avoided by reconstituting the ATP Reagents in Diluent B as the diluent contains components to neutralize the extractant. BioThema currently offer these five extractants:
